Stan Musial is 2nd (Aaron) ALL-Time for Total Bases with 6134 of them for his Career. He is 3rd ALL-Time with 1377 XBH. He also is 5th ALL-Time in RBI with 1951 (1 ahead of A-ROD) and 8th in Runs Scored with 1949. His 725 Doubles trail only Pete Rose and Ty Cobb on the ALL-Time List. His 177 Triples are good for 19th ALL-Time. Meanwhile, only 4 players have topped 100 3B on the Active List: (Crawford-119, Reyes – 114, Damon -109, Rollins 105) and Juan Pierre (92) has a shot at the century mark for his Career. The game has changed, importance of XBH has not.

Each week, I’ll feature a baseball card of one of these all-time greats. Along the way, we’ll talk about other aspects of America’s Hobby, why it continues to grow in popularity, and answer any questions you may have.
We lost Stan Musial on January 19th. The outpouring of sentiment from all of baseball was heartwarming and appropriate. No finer man or ballplayer ever graced a major league locker room. Musial’s passing touched a nerve in baseball fans across America, Bob Costas included. Watch how he struggles with his emotions as he delivers his simple but eloquent eulogy to Stan The Man:

Stan Musial led in over 70 Single Season Categories for his distinguished career. Incredibly, the man hit .310+ in 16 straight seasons from 1942-1958.
I won’t rehash The Man’s statistics which have been written about extensively the past month. But I will add two anecdotes, one that speaks to his greatness on the field and one to his everyman personality that made him so popular.
Musial “The Ballplayer”– Stan The Man is the only person in MLB history to lead his franchise in Singles, Doubles, Triples, and Home Runs. And the franchise we’re talking about is the St. Louis Cardinals who have been around since 1900 and are the second most successful organization in baseball (Eleven World Series Championships to the Yankees’ Twenty-Seven).
Musial “The Person” – My dad is a lifelong baseball fan who, at age ninety-two, is still sharp as a tack. One of his favorite baseball stories (of the many he tells) is when he visited Musial’s restaurant in St. Louis, many years ago. He was with seven other colleagues and Stan made a point of stopping by to say hello. Musial went around the table shaking each person’s hand and asking them where they were from. When he reached my dad and asked him the question, my father responded with “I’m from the place with the right field fence you liked best of all.” “Ebbets Field!” Stan replied, with a big smile on his face. My father was taken by what a regular guy the great Stan Musial was.
Musial’s rookie card was issued in 1948, and recently sold for $130,000. While one-of-a-kind in quality (graded 10, gem mint, by PSA) it features a black and white photo of The Man and isn’t all that eye-catching. In building my collection of 3,000 hit ballplayers, I chose what I believe is the most attractive of all Musial cards, #196 of the 1952 Bowman Series:
This beautiful card is a fitting tribute to Stan The Man. It is graded mint (9) by PSA, the highest grade on record, and has a market value of approximately $3,000. Musial is fourth in career hits with 3,630 and had a lifetime batting average of .331. A big thank-you goes out to Our ‘Baseball Memorabilia Enthusiast’ Lee Edelstein for preparing today’s featured article. Lee was born and raised in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, New York. He inherited his love of baseball from his dad. The game has been Lee’s constant companion since he was seven years old – when his dad took him to see his first ball game at Ebbets Field. This was followed by a brief and largely unsuccessful Little League career. While he wasn’t all that good on the ball field he became an ALL-Star at collecting baseball cards.
His collection is still alive today after surviving many scares over the years. Lee was also much better at business than playing baseball. He was good enough that he was able to retire and pursue his other passion – writing about baseball! Chin Music is his first novel. He is hard at work on his second, Mound Music.
